Domestic violence impacts all demographics, regardless of age, gender, socioeconomic standing, ethnicity or sexual orientation. However, it is important to examine the unique realities of those minority voices so to better address the struggles faced by historically marginalized groups. In this presentation, we will examine how social determinants of health and systems of oppression influence the experiences of domestic violence for members of the LGBTQ+ community, recent immigrants, those who use substances and our older population. Not fitting the established conception of who a domestic abuse victim is, these populations have traditionally been excluded from services and support. We are working to change that, by broadening our understanding of domestic violence and listening to every victim/survivor, we can a healthier, safer future.
