Course description:
“Be kind, don’t panic, and have faith.” In this course, we’ll explore how that seven-word formula can serve as a guide to helping couples understand their situation, get hold of themselves, and strengthen their resolve to do the work of healing. And we’ll see how the formula can be applied in some common couples therapy situations, including infidelity, sex problems, and knowing when to call it quits.
This course is based on ideas in Bruce’s recently published book, Reigniting the Spark: Why Stable Relationships Lose Intimacy, and How to Get It Back.
Learning objectives:
At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to:
• Describe how the assumption of good will supports a couple’s sense of kinship
• Describe the “two golden gifts” of stability and intimacy, and characterize the different—and often conflicting—skills couples need for each
• Describe the death spiral for passion that results, paradoxically, from the anxiety inherent in risking intimacy in stable relationships
• Describe how faith—not necessarily religious—is essential for couples, and their therapists, to tolerate the anxiety of intimacy
About the Presenters:
Bruce Chalmer has been a psychologist in private practice for over 25 years, working with couples, families, and individuals. Through his videos, workshops, and supervision, he has taught about the practice of therapy and principles of relationships to thousands. His book Reigniting the Spark: Why Stable Relationships Lose Intimacy, and How to Get It Back was published in March 2020 (just in time for the pandemic!). Together with Judy (to whom he is married), he is the cohost of the podcast “Couples Therapy in Seven Words.”
Judy Alexander is an educator, serving for over 20 years as the Education Director at Temple Sinai in South Burlington, Vermont, where she is the principal of the religious school and directs adult education programs. (Her participation in this workshop is as an individual, not as a representative of Temple Sinai.) As cohost with Bruce of the “Couples Therapy in Seven Words” podcast, and co-presenter of this workshop, she brings a non-therapist perspective to the conversation.
