The Social Work Code of Ethics tells us that “social workers should engage in social and political action that seeks to ensure that all people have equal access to the resources, employment, services, and opportunities they require to meet their basic human needs and to develop fully” but it’s not always easy to know where to start when it comes to putting this ethical standard into practice. Moxie Case Coach Moriah Geer MSW will provide an overview of how legislative advocacy works in Maine, including the ways that this session will be different due to the pandemic, and practical tools and tips from Maine Equal Justice’s many years of doing this work. We will take an in-depth look at some of the legislation that the NASW Maine Policy Committee has chosen to prioritize this session.

Linda Li, LICSW, NASW VT Chapter President, will be giving a brief presentation on cultural competency and social work ethics. Then participants will discuss case scenarios in small groups. As with any ethical dilemma, social workers are advised to identify the ethical standards in conflict, seek peer consultation, and document their decision making process. This Ethics Forum will give participants practice in this fundamental skill.

In Our Own Voice (IOOV) is an interactive presentation that aims to change assumptions and stereotypes about people living with mental health conditions.

Two trained presenters with lived experience of a mental health condition talk openly about their experiences and how they have found pathways to hope and healing. Audience members will have the opportunity to ask questions to learn more about living with mental health conditions and how to live well in spite of them.

Topics relating to appropriate and ethical boundaries with clients will be explored including connection to NASW Code of Ethics, examples of ethical boundary violations presented in case examples and explored in real-time discussion, blurring of boundaries, ways in which we unconsciously disclose information, and skills to think critically and ethically around personal disclosure with clients.
